January marks the end of the rainy season, bringing hot, mostly clear days with occasional showers. Fresh green vegetation transforms the savanna, attracting elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions, and abundant wildlife. In the southern Serengeti and Ndutu near the Ngorongoro border, vast herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles gather for the calving season, making this an exceptional time to witness the Great Migration.
February is one of Tanzania’s hottest months. While it falls within the dry season, short rain showers can occur several times a week.
In the southern Serengeti, wildebeest and zebra remain in the heart of the calving season. Calves born in January grow stronger and begin joining the migrating herds. Across northern Tanzania, wildlife such as lions, leopards, elephants, and giraffes can also be spotted throughout the national parks.
The first half of March is generally sunny, with the rains usually arriving around mid-month. Fresh grass quickly covers the savanna, while new water sources allow wildlife to spread across the parks. Visitor numbers also begin to decline, creating a quieter safari experience.
The Great Migration continues its annual journey. By the end of March, the first wildebeest and zebra herds begin leaving the southern plains and moving deeper into the Serengeti. With large numbers of young animals and migrating herds, predator sightings are often excellent.
April marks the heart of Tanzania’s long rainy season. Regular afternoon showers and occasional heavy rainfall bring the landscape to life, turning the savanna lush and green. Visitor numbers are at their lowest, making it one of the quietest months for a safari.
The Great Migration continues moving north through the Serengeti as wildebeest and zebras follow fresh grazing. Wildlife remains active, and the abundance of young animals attracts predators. Despite wetter conditions, game viewing can be rewarding, particularly during breaks in the rain.
The rainy season continues in May, although rainfall gradually decreases toward the end of the month. The savanna remains lush and green, with wildlife active throughout Tanzania’s national parks. In the western Serengeti, large herds of wildebeest and zebras gather around the Grumeti River, where they face large Nile crocodiles before continuing their migration. Predators follow closely behind, creating excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities. Visitor numbers remain low, making May a quieter time for safari, while many lodges offer seasonal discounts.
June marks the beginning of Tanzania’s dry season, bringing cooler temperatures, clear skies, and very little rainfall. The landscape gradually becomes drier, concentrating wildlife around rivers and remaining water sources and making game viewing increasingly rewarding. In the western Serengeti, large herds of wildebeest and zebras continue moving north after crossing the Grumeti River, while predators follow closely behind. Visitor numbers begin to rise as conditions improve, but the parks are generally less crowded than during the peak months of July and August.
July is one of Tanzania’s driest months, with clear skies, cool mornings, and warm afternoons creating excellent conditions for safari. Wildlife gathers around rivers and waterholes as natural water sources become scarce. In the northern Serengeti, the Great Migration continues northward, with large herds of wildebeest and zebras reaching the Mara River, where dramatic river crossings may occur. Visitor numbers are high, especially in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, but the excellent weather and abundant wildlife make July a popular time for safari.
August is one of Tanzania’s driest months, with sunny days, cool mornings, and very little rainfall. Wildlife is concentrated around rivers and permanent water sources, making animals easier to locate across the national parks. In the northern Serengeti, the Great Migration reaches the Mara River, where large herds of wildebeest and zebras may attempt dramatic river crossings while crocodiles and predators wait nearby. Visitor numbers remain high, particularly around key migration areas, but the dry conditions provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.
September remains dry and sunny across Tanzania, with cool mornings, warm afternoons, and very little rainfall. As water becomes scarce, wildlife gathers around rivers, lakes, and permanent waterholes, making game viewing particularly rewarding. In the northern Serengeti, the Great Migration continues around the Mara River, with wildebeest and zebras moving between Tanzania and Kenya while predators remain active nearby. Visitor numbers begin to ease toward the end of the month, offering excellent safari conditions with slightly fewer crowds.
October is generally warm and dry, although short showers may begin toward the end of the month as the landscape prepares for the short rains. Wildlife remains concentrated around permanent water sources, making game viewing excellent across Tanzania’s national parks. In the Serengeti, the Great Migration gradually moves south from the northern plains as wildebeest and zebras follow fresh grazing. Visitor numbers begin to decrease, offering a quieter safari experience while wildlife remains abundant.
November brings the short rains to Tanzania, with brief showers refreshing the landscape and turning the savanna green again. Wildlife remains active across the national parks, while fewer visitors create a quieter safari experience. In the Serengeti, the Great Migration continues southward as wildebeest and zebras follow the new grass, with predators often nearby. The combination of fresh vegetation, abundant wildlife, and lower visitor numbers makes November an appealing time to explore Tanzania’s parks.
December marks the end of the short rains, with occasional showers keeping Tanzania’s landscapes green and vibrant. Wildlife remains widely distributed across the national parks, while migratory herds continue moving through the Serengeti in search of fresh grazing. The southern Serengeti begins to attract increasing numbers of wildebeest and zebras as the migration approaches the calving areas. Visitor numbers rise toward the festive season, but excellent wildlife viewing and lush scenery make December a rewarding time for a safari.

We had an unforgettable safari! Whilst of course the nature and all animals, including leopards and cheetahs and all others, were beautiful, the organization was very good. The safari guide Rocky was very knowledgeable, and the accommodations were also what was agreed on. Food, breaks, comfort, safety - everything was included and to a good standard. Also bringing an additional luggage that we had left in Arusha to us after the safari worked out well. Can only recommend and thank you very much much for this stunning adventure! ☺️Posted on Google![]()
