Arusha National Park is a remarkably diverse highland wilderness surrounding Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain. Located close to Arusha city, the park brings together montane forest, open grasslands, volcanic landscapes, crater lakes and the dramatic slopes of Mount Meru within a relatively compact area.
The park is divided naturally into several contrasting landscapes. The forested lower slopes of Mount Meru provide habitat for buffalo, giraffes and primates, while the open Momella plains offer broad views across the surrounding landscape. Rising above them, the Meru crater and volcanic slopes create a dramatic mountain backdrop that gives the park much of its visual character.
The Momella Lakes are among Arusha National Park’s most distinctive features. These shallow alkaline lakes attract large numbers of waterbirds, including flamingos, and provide an opportunity to explore the park from a different perspective. Depending on the season and water levels, the lakes can take on striking shades of blue and green against the surrounding forest and grasslands.
Arusha National Park is also one of Tanzania’s most accessible destinations for walking and canoeing. Guided walking safaris allow visitors to explore forest and open landscapes on foot, while canoe excursions on the Momella Lakes offer quiet encounters with waterbirds and views across the surrounding terrain.
Mount Meru provides the park’s greatest adventure. The multi-day ascent follows the Momella Route through changing ecological zones toward Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres. The climb combines mountain scenery with wildlife-rich lower slopes and can also serve as an acclimatisation experience for travellers preparing to climb Kilimanjaro.
Wildlife viewing in Arusha is different from the concentrated game viewing of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Giraffes are particularly characteristic of the open plains, while buffalo, zebra, warthogs and antelope can be encountered across the grasslands. The forests shelter blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys, while the park’s diverse habitats support an impressive variety of birds.
Its proximity to Arusha makes the park particularly versatile. It can be explored as a half-day or full-day safari, incorporated into a longer northern Tanzania itinerary, or used as the starting point for a Mount Meru trekking adventure. The combination of mountain, forest, lakes and wildlife makes Arusha National Park one of the most varied destinations on the northern circuit.
