Overview

Zanzibar Island, also known as Unguja, is Tanzania’s principal Indian Ocean island and a destination where beaches, history, culture and marine life come together. Its coastline ranges from broad white-sand beaches and turquoise lagoons to coral reefs and traditional fishing communities, creating a natural complement to a mainland safari.

The island is particularly known for its historic capital, Stone Town, whose narrow streets, carved wooden doors, old merchant houses and waterfront reflect centuries of Swahili, African, Arab, Indian and European influences. The historic quarter provides a cultural dimension that contrasts strongly with Zanzibar’s relaxed beach resorts.

Zanzibar’s marine environment is another major attraction. The surrounding Indian Ocean supports coral reefs, tropical fish, sea turtles and other marine life, with opportunities for snorkelling, diving, sailing and traditional dhow excursions. The northern beaches around Nungwi and Kendwa are known for their clear waters and broad sandy shores, while the east coast offers a different character with tidal lagoons, coral beaches and quieter coastal settings.

The island is also closely associated with spices. Cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and other crops have shaped Zanzibar’s agricultural history and earned it the nickname Spice Island. Spice tours provide an opportunity to explore plantations while learning about the plants, farming traditions and historical trade that influenced the island.

Away from the beaches, Zanzibar offers forests, caves, villages and marine conservation areas. Jozani Forest is particularly significant for its population of Zanzibar red colobus monkeys, an endemic species found nowhere else in the world.

Zanzibar is therefore more than a beach extension. It can be experienced as a destination in its own right, combining Indian Ocean relaxation, Swahili heritage, marine adventures, spice culture and island nature. It also fits naturally at the end of a Tanzania safari, providing a slower coastal experience after time in the mainland wilderness.
