Overview

Gombe Stream National Park is one of Tanzania’s most intimate and historically significant wildlife destinations, a narrow wilderness of steep forested valleys, wooded hills and sandy shores along Lake Tanganyika. Rather than vast savannah plains, Gombe offers a completely different safari experience: walking through dense tropical forest in search of wild chimpanzees and other primates.

The park is internationally renowned for the pioneering chimpanzee research begun by Dr. Jane Goodall in 1960. Her long-term observations transformed scientific understanding of chimpanzee behaviour and revealed the complexity of their social relationships, individual personalities and use of tools. Today, Gombe remains closely associated with this extraordinary history, while continuing to protect wild chimpanzee communities within their natural forest habitat.

Chimpanzee trekking is the defining experience. Guided walks follow natural forest trails into the hills and valleys, where visitors may encounter chimpanzees feeding, travelling through the canopy, grooming, calling or interacting with members of their community. The experience is deliberately intimate and respectful, with park guides and rangers overseeing encounters with the animals.

Gombe’s forest is also home to several other primate species, including red colobus, red-tailed, blue and vervet monkeys and olive baboons. More than 35 mammal species have been recorded in the park, while its forests support a rich bird community including species such as African fish eagle, palm-nut vulture, paradise flycatcher and Schalow’s turaco.

The landscape itself is part of the attraction. Forested slopes rise from the shores of Lake Tanganyika toward the Great Rift Valley escarpments, creating steep valleys, viewpoints and hiking trails with expansive views across the lake. Waterfalls, forest paths and secluded beaches add another dimension to the experience beyond chimpanzee trekking.

Lake Tanganyika also allows Gombe to be experienced beyond the forest. Boat excursions, lakeside exploration and snorkelling provide opportunities to experience one of Africa’s great freshwater environments, while sunsets over the lake create a striking contrast to the dense green forest rising immediately behind the shoreline.

Gombe is best suited to travellers looking for something more personal and immersive than a traditional vehicle-based safari. Here, the journey takes place on foot, following forest trails into the world of one of humanity’s closest living relatives, while the history of Jane Goodall’s research gives the destination an intellectual and conservation dimension found nowhere else in Tanzania.
