Overview

ake Natron is one of northern Tanzania’s most distinctive landscapes, lying beneath the active volcanic landscape of the Gregory Rift Valley near the border with Kenya. The shallow, highly alkaline lake is fed mainly by the Ewaso Ng’iro River and seasonal streams, while intense evaporation concentrates minerals and salts in the water. The result is a constantly changing landscape of shallow water, salt-encrusted shores, mudflats and striking mineral colours.

The lake is particularly important for lesser flamingos, which use its remote alkaline wetlands as one of their major breeding areas in East Africa. During suitable conditions, enormous numbers of flamingos gather across the lake, creating one of Tanzania’s most memorable wildlife spectacles. The harsh chemical conditions also help limit predators and many other animals, providing an unusual form of protection for breeding birds.

Lake Natron is also defined by its volcanic surroundings. Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred mountain of the Maasai and one of the world’s most unusual active volcanoes, rises dramatically above the landscape. Its slopes and the surrounding escarpments create a powerful backdrop to the lake and offer opportunities for hiking and volcanic exploration.

Beyond the lake itself, the area offers a more intimate style of northern Tanzania travel. Visitors can walk to waterfalls and natural pools, explore volcanic terrain, observe birds and experience Maasai culture with local guides. The destination is particularly suited to travellers looking for landscapes and experiences that differ from the major game-viewing parks of the Northern Circuit.

Lake Natron works especially well as part of a wider northern Tanzania itinerary, combining naturally with Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti while adding volcanic scenery, flamingos, walking and cultural experiences to a conventional safari journey.
