Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s great wilderness destinations, a vast landscape of floodplains, miombo woodlands, riverine forests, lakes and open grasslands shaped by the mighty Rufiji River. Formerly part of the legendary Selous Game Reserve, the park offers an exceptionally varied safari experience where wildlife can be explored by vehicle, boat and on foot.
The Rufiji River is the defining feature of Nyerere. Its wide channels, oxbow lakes, sandbanks and surrounding wetlands create an extraordinary environment for wildlife. Hippos and crocodiles gather in the water, while elephants, buffalo, giraffes and other animals frequently move along the riverbanks. Boat safaris provide a completely different perspective, allowing travellers to experience the wildlife and landscape from the water.
Away from the river, vast plains and miombo woodlands support an impressive diversity of wildlife. Lions, leopards, spotted hyenas and African wild dogs move through the park alongside elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, impalas, waterbuck and a variety of antelope. Nyerere is particularly significant for African wild dogs and is recognised by TANAPA as one of East Africa’s important strongholds for the species.
The scale of the park creates a strong sense of wilderness. Rather than being defined by a single landscape, Nyerere changes continually between woodland, open plains, wetlands and river corridors. This variety also creates opportunities for different types of safari, from traditional game drives to quiet river excursions and guided walking experiences.
Walking safaris offer another way to experience Nyerere, bringing attention to animal tracks, plants, insects, birds and the smaller details of the ecosystem that can easily be missed from a vehicle. Guided walks can also include overnight fly-camping experiences for travellers seeking a more immersive wilderness adventure.
Birdlife is another important part of the park. More than 430 species have been recorded, with fish eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters, wetland birds and other species occupying the river, woodland and floodplain habitats.
Nyerere is particularly well suited to travellers looking for a safari experience that combines wildlife with wilderness and water. Its enormous scale, low visitor density, river safaris and diverse habitats give southern Tanzania a character very different from the classic northern safari circuit.
