7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Marangu Route

Tour start :

Duration: 7 days

Comfort level: Mid Range

Price starts from

$2160

Overview

The Marangu Route is one of the most established and accessible routes on Mount Kilimanjaro and is the only route where trekkers stay in mountain huts rather than tents throughout the climb. Often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” it follows a well-defined trail through several distinct ecological zones, from cultivated foothills and rainforest to alpine desert and the high-altitude summit zone.

This itinerary combines a 5-day ascent and descent via the Marangu Route with an additional acclimatization day at Horombo Huts. Although the route is less technical than some other Kilimanjaro routes, the significant altitude gain makes acclimatization, pacing, hydration, and preparation essential. Adding an extra day at Horombo provides more time for your body to adjust to the altitude and can improve your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Your climb is organized by Marhaba Escape Safari, with an experienced mountain guide, accommodation before and after the climb, meals during the trek, and transfers to and from the mountain.

Day 2
Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts
Climbers-on-their-way-to-summit

After breakfast, depart Arusha and drive to Marangu Gate, where you will complete the necessary registration and park entry procedures before beginning your trek.

The trail initially passes through cultivated areas and local villages before entering the lush rainforest of Mount Kilimanjaro. The forest is rich in vegetation and birdlife, and you may encounter monkeys along the trail.

Continue gradually uphill through the forest toward Mandara Huts, located at approximately 2,720 metres. Depending on your arrival time, you may take an optional short walk toward Maundi Crater for views across the surrounding landscape.

After settling into the mountain huts, enjoy dinner and rest for the night.

Day 3
Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts
marangu

After breakfast, continue your ascent toward Horombo Huts.

The landscape gradually changes as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. Giant heathers, grasses, and distinctive high-altitude plants replace the dense forest, while the views become increasingly expansive.

As you gain elevation, the effects of altitude may become more noticeable. Your guide will maintain a steady pace and encourage regular hydration and rest.

Arrive at Horombo Huts in the afternoon and settle in. If conditions allow, take a short acclimatization walk around the surrounding area before returning to camp.

Enjoy dinner and overnight at Horombo Huts.

Day 4
Explore & Acclimatize at Horombo Huts - 3,720 m
kilimanjaro-24_13-1

Today is dedicated to acclimatization rather than making a major move to a higher camp.

After breakfast, take a guided acclimatization hike around the Horombo area. Depending on conditions and your guide’s recommendation, the walk may take you toward higher ground in the direction of Zebra Rocks or another suitable nearby point before returning to Horombo Huts.

The principle of the day is simple: climb higher during the day and return to sleep at a lower elevation. This gives your body additional time to adapt before the demanding ascent toward Kibo.

Spend the remainder of the day resting, hydrating, and preparing your equipment for the following day’s climb.

Enjoy dinner and another night at Horombo Huts.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5
Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts
ClimbKilimanjaro

After breakfast, begin the ascent toward Kibo Huts, passing through the high-altitude moorland before entering the alpine desert zone.

The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you approach the saddle between Mount Kibo and Mawenzi Peak. This exposed landscape offers dramatic views but provides little natural shelter, so maintaining a steady pace is important.

After several hours of trekking, arrive at Kibo Huts, located at approximately 4,720 metres. Have lunch and spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the summit attempt.

Your guide will provide a briefing for the following day’s summit ascent, including the early start, clothing, hydration, pacing, and safety considerations.

Have an early dinner and get as much rest as possible before the midnight summit attempt.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6
Kibo Huts to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Huts
day 6

The summit day begins around midnight. After a light meal, begin the demanding ascent toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at approximately 5,895 metres.

The climb begins in darkness and follows a steep trail over loose volcanic terrain toward Gilman’s Point, located on the crater rim at approximately 5,681 metres. From here, continue around the crater rim toward Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak.

The final section can be physically demanding because of the altitude, cold, and accumulated fatigue. Take your time and follow your guide’s pace.

Reach Uhuru Peak and, weather permitting, enjoy spectacular views across the surrounding landscape as the sun rises. Take photographs and celebrate your achievement before beginning the descent.

Return to Kibo Huts for a short rest before continuing downhill toward Horombo Huts.

This is a long and demanding day, with many hours spent trekking at high altitude, so adequate preparation and careful pacing are essential.

We had an unforgettable safari! Whilst of course the nature and all animals, including leopards and cheetahs and all others, were beautiful, the organization was very good. The safari guide Rocky was very knowledgeable, and the accommodations were also what was agreed on. Food, breaks, comfort, safety - everything was included and to a good standard. Also bringing an additional luggage that we had left in Arusha to us after the safari worked out well. Can only recommend and thank you very much much for this stunning adventure! ☺️

Exceptional services, encompassing everything from interactions, the chauffeur, dependability, to dining services - it felt like VIP treatment in the heart of the savanna! The driver (Assad) was remarkably informed and accommodating to our numerous inquiries and requests, going above and beyond throughout the tour - enabling us to see a wide array of animals and ensuring we had a fantastic experience!
